In 2025, MacLean-Fogg proudly celebrated 100 years of delivering engineered solutions to customers around the world. That same year marked another significant milestone within our organization — the 120th anniversary of Curtis Screw Company.
Founded in 1905 in Buffalo, New York, Curtis Screw began with a pioneering spirit. Frank O. Curtis established the company to produce and sell his five-spindle screw machine, building upon patents originally held by his father in 1891. What began as a small operation with three employees earning a combined weekly wage of $11.51 quickly evolved into a growing manufacturing enterprise. Frank later shifted the company’s focus toward producing screw machined parts using his innovative equipment, setting the foundation for decades of precision manufacturing excellence.
Under the leadership of Scott Osgood, who served as president from 1917 to 1958, Curtis Screw expanded its original 9,000-square-foot facility to 25,400 square feet. New production equipment was installed and the company experienced substantial business growth — firmly establishing Curtis Screw as a trusted manufacturing partner.
The company’s trajectory accelerated in 1958 when Harry G. Smith became president. His 10-year expansion initiative included the purchase of a 50,000-square-foot facility and significant operational growth. By 1970, Curtis Screw was recognized as one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of machined metal components.
In 1978, John Hoskins assumed leadership and reinforced Curtis Screw’s high-quality standards and deep commitment to customer satisfaction. Under his guidance, the company sharpened its focus on the automotive industry and expanded operations significantly. In 1982, Curtis Screw opened a second facility in Cornelius, North Carolina, secured its largest contract in company history, and launched a third facility in Buffalo, New York. The 1988 acquisition of Sheldon Precision in Prospect, Connecticut added Swiss-turning capabilities, enabling production of precision components ranging from .012″ to 3.5″ in diameter. In 2004, Curtis Screw consolidated its two Buffalo plants into a fully renovated 150,000-square-foot facility — where Buffalo operations continue today.
A new chapter began in November 2014, when the Buffalo, NY and Cornelius, NC (now Mooresville, NC) facilities became part of MacLean-Fogg Component Solutions. As a diversified global company serving automotive, industrial, and material handling industries, MacLean-Fogg brought additional scale, engineering expertise, and global reach to Curtis Screw’s long-standing capabilities.
Today, MacLean Curtis specializes in the manufacture of automatic transmission safety critical parking system components, gear blanks and other precision machined parts for automotive and other industries. Its greatest strength remains unchanged: the skilled, experienced, and resolute craftsmen who take pride in producing quality components that meet the highest performance standards.
As MacLean-Fogg marks 100 years and MacLean Curtis celebrates 120 years in 2025, we honor not only the longevity of our businesses but the generations of people whose expertise, integrity, and commitment to excellence built this legacy.
Together, these milestones represent more than years in operation — they represent a shared history of innovation, resilience, and partnership that continues to shape our future.
